We visited the Vancouver landfill today to get some compost soil, and it was a great experience.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially since it was our first time there. They guided us well to the compost area, which was about half a kilometer from the entrance.

The sight was quite impressive—there were huge piles of branches and leaves in various stages of decomposition.

To collect the compost soil, you need to bring your own containers and tools. My kids were thrilled to help shovel the soil themselves. There are weight scales at the entrance and exit, and we were charged based on the weight.

We ended up taking 260 kg of soil, which cost us just $5.

Overall, it’s a fantastic place with a great setup.

I have been really impressed with the quality of the landfill compost I pick up each year for my garden and the community garden I coordinate. It’s very cheap, bug and weed free.

One of the big take outs is the natural wood chip in it, great for organic soil fungal networks to develop in and it is well aerated. So you can use it directly and it does not have to be mixed with sand.

Also found all the folk at the landfill nice people to deal with, great customer service.

One day I hope they open that dam to carp fisherman……like me.

Very disappointed with this place. The staff leave you in a queue that took over 35 minutes today. Eventually when the support member of staff turned up he had no idea what to do. I have one car in front waiting on the weight bridge. I waited over 35 minutes? This place is run like a joke. Is our tax paying money subsidizing this place?
Wake Vancouver Landfill. You charge too much and offer horrible service or support.

Wow, impressed to see how organized this place is. The biggest wow factor was definitely the birds and eagles swarming the place. Truly a sight to see if you have ever wondered how an eagle would look close up. Excellent photo opp for the price of throwing away some garbage.

First time here. The place is oganized well. Person at the entrance seemed a bit cranky but did tell us where to go for compost. Cheapest compost you can find just about anywhere, and pretty decent quality.

Place is organised and run by great staff. We had a chance to tour the facility today with Brian, who did a fantastic job sharing about the operations while inspiring the general public to be environmentally aware. As contributing residents to this landfill, I appreciate all the staff are doing to encourage reducing, reusing and recycling!

Great place to learn and teach your kids where your garbage ends up during their annual open house. However, getting into the facility from southbound South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) and then getting onto northbound SFPR from the facility is a nightmare as you have to drive many extra miles. They need better access.
