We have a LOT of great things to say about Solis Energy! They were all very friendly and professional, the quality of their workmanship was excellent, and they were fast! The whole system was installed in just a couple of days, and they cleaned up so thoroughly that you’d never even know that they were here… not even a leftover screw lying around… awesome. When the government inspector guy came by to do the assessment, he looked at all the wiring, electrical panels, installation, etc., and literally said “Wow, the guys who installed this are very good.”

The only thing that keeps me from giving them a full 5/5 is some of the math that hasn’t exactly worked out. We’ve now had the system operational for a year, so are now able to comment on the system’s performance, and associated costs, savings, etc. Here are some of the gotchas that we were told during the sales cycle that people may want to be weary of:
- Max power: We were sold 500W panels, and the payback period was calculated based on them generating this amount of power. However, in actuality, they only produce about a maximum of about 385W each, even on summer solstice, at noon, in full sun. That’s 27% below what we were sold, so when I asked this, the explanation was that they never run them at full power for longevity reasons. Fair enough, but I wish this had been used for the calcs during the sales cycle.
- Cloudy days: We were told that cloud doesn’t affect the panels much, probably max about a 5 to 10% drop in power. In actuality, cloud cover drops the power production by 60 to 80%.
- Snow: We were told that snow doesn’t affect power production much, max about 3% drop, as the sun’s rays penetrate snow. In actuality, even a skiff of snow, drops the power production by 80%, and 5 cm or more on the panels pretty much kills all the power; like 95% reduction. Luckily, we didn’t get a lot of snow this winter, so we only lost about 4 or 5 weeks of power production, but this would be more significant in a normal season.
- Power company fees: We were recommended to get onto Enmax’s Seasonal Solar plan, which we did. They pay you for the excess power that you put back into the grid, and they have winter rate of 11 cents per kWh, and a summer rate of 30 cents per kWh. This is important for estimating what your monthly costs/credits could be, over the year, and therefore what your payback period is likely to be. Alberta’s various admin & distribution fees breakdown is admittedly complex and silly, but we were told that we could expect the monthly admin fees to drop to probably about $20. In fact, Enmax’s fees didn’t go down at all, and actually went up in comparison to our previous Epcor fees. For example, one month we were charged over $100 in fees for just 675 kWh of power. This eats into the summer credits that you’re supposed to be accumulating.
- Summary: We were told we could expect a payback period of about 7 years. In the 12 months prior to solar, our annual electric cost was $2537, and for the subsequent 12 months with the panels, it has dropped to $553. Sounds great, but factoring in the cost of the solar system (including the $5k Greener Homes subsidy and the 0% loan), our actual payback period is calculating out to be about 14 years. Would I do it again, knowing this? Probably not.

We really enjoyed Solis setting up our property with the solar system. Cory ( sales rep) explained the full process in great detail. The installation crew were also fantastic. Would definitely recommend.

The whole process was pretty quick from the day we agreed to install Jan 2024 system was fully installed by April 2024. Darryl and his team were great. I know 3 other friends that also used Solis Energy to install their solar and all of us are very happy. If you are thinking solar for your home and you want it done right and without delay think Solis Energy.
