Our water heater stopped working and we ordered a new one from Modern Mechanical. Technician plumber Brett Knox arrived at out home at 9:30 this morning as promised in a text sent 45 minutes earlier. He scoped things out and went to work. He wrestled the old bulky 75 gallon tank out of the utility closet and installed a new 50 gallon tank in about 3.5 hours. He did a beautiful job with the copper piping and put in a new expansion tank. He also realigned the overflow pipe from the new overflow pan so it didn't conflict with the access to our HVAC filter as before.
Brett was extremely courteous, professional and trustworthy. Brett is a thoughtful, kind individual with a positive vibe about him. We enjoyed having him in our home. I would highly recommend Brett for any of your plumbing needs.

We had another great experience with Mike today. We had a big install for a leaky pump as well as some minor maintenance work. Throughout the experience, Mike has always done a fantastic job of evaluating the situation, explaining to me in layman‘s terms what’s going on, and then presenting options. He always shows me the pictures and communication that he’s sending for my report so that I know what to expect. He lets me know what the next step should be and how to best take care of my maintained equipment. For example, today one of the minor maintenance items was replacing my water filter, and he made sure to order an extra one so that I knew what part number to order moving forward. He’s always detail oriented and thoughtful in that way. We recently had a mixup with the ordering of parts and throughout the experience Mike was the consummate Professional, and when I normally would have considered looking for another service, his skill and service level convinced me to stay and have him do the work. And after today, I’m so glad I did. As long as Mike is at Benjamin Franklin, we’ll be returning customers!

We recently had our HVAC replaced by Modern Mechanical and George was the most honest salesperson I’ve ever met. He was upfront with the costs, pros/cons of various units and took the time to walk us through the entire process to make an informed decision. The installers were great and didn’t leave a mess behind and took the time to show us some of the features of the furnace, humidifier, AC and thermostat.

I’ve been a loyal customer of Modern Mechanical and have a service contract with them. During their visit in October, the technician inspected our downstairs gas furnace and noted that the system was in "good condition" and functioning properly. Despite this, I raised a serious concern about the possibility of carbon monoxide (CO) circulating in my home, as I’ve been experiencing flu-like symptoms and have ruled out any medical conditions as the cause.

To my surprise, I was told that combustion testing to check for CO would cost an additional $874! This is especially concerning given the company’s mission to improve comfort and serve the community as a socially conscious corporate citizen. Ensuring safety, including CO testing, should be a standard part of any thorough inspection or offered at a fair cost, particularly for contract holders.

Carbon monoxide testing is widely recognized as a critical best practice in the HVAC industry. Professional organizations, such as ASHRAE, emphasize the importance of regular CO testing to ensure proper ventilation and safeguard indoor air quality. Regular testing is essential for identifying potential leaks and protecting the health and safety of building occupants.

Additionally, I’ve repeatedly asked Modern Mechanical for a copy of my maintenance contract, but they have refused to send it. This lack of transparency and unwillingness to address a potential safety hazard without charging an excessive fee is unacceptable.

Modern Mechanical needs to prioritize customer safety and align their practices with their stated mission. Unfortunately, this experience has left me questioning their commitment to their customers and the community they claim to serve.

No issue with the guys who come and do the actual work.

However, I would not recommend the annual service plan and I would just double check what you're going to be charged for before having someone dispatched. I had a plumber come out to fix/install a new kitchen sink faucet at a rental property (was talked into the annual service plan, which is an upfront cost but then reduces the cost of sending out a tech from that point on). Tenant complained a couple of days later about water temp issues and we had the plumber come back out. Our understanding was that, as this was a follow up to an install that they had just done, there would be no charge to have the guy come back out. However, because they said they didn't see an issue with the install or work done, they WERE going to charge me and that "we went back and listened to our phone call and we said you wouldn't be charged IF there was a problem with the work."

Look, if that's the policy, fine, it was only a $60 dispatch fee, but I made it clear that that was NOT clear to us when we had the person come out, and would not have paid again if we had known that. About 10 minutes later, I had "customer support" call me back and say, and I quote, "I was told to call back for collection."

Again, the plumber was very generous, honest, and did good work, and this isn't the biggest issue in the world. But the simple truth is there are plenty of other home repair/handyman services in Loudoun County that do good work at similar or lower prices and have better customer service. I will be looking to cancel my service plan and switch to a different provider.

"I recently had a terrible experience with this company. Their technician caused significant damage to my bathroom during a routine generator maintenance visit. Despite my complaint, the company offered no apology or explanation for the incident.
Furthermore, after leaving a negative review, I discovered that the company had blocked my phone number. This prevented me from contacting them for service, even though I had multiple maintenance contracts with them (which I now strongly advise against).
Their website emphasizes their commitment to 'family and community,' but in my experience, this was far from the truth. I believe they discriminate against customers with accents, as I was treated with rudeness throughout the entire ordeal.
I urge anyone considering their services to strongly reconsider. I recommend seeking a more reliable and honest service provider, even if it costs more."

We ended up needing a new hot water heater unexpectedly.
Omar, with Modern Mechanical, showed up within the scheduled time frame and went right to work . He diagnosed the situation to determine if he could salvage the existing hot water heater with a repair or if replacing it was the best option. The 20 year old unit needed replacing so Omar began the job. He worked non stop until the new water heater was installed and functioning properly.
His work is very clean, neat and professional. Would / will definitely recommend him and Modern Mechanical to others.

Extremely disgusted with their classic bait and switch “sell you the Brooklyn Bridge” tactics. After four visits in a calendar year, their useless and overpriced “maintenance plan,” and all the other upsells (about $1600) the unit now apparently needs a $1500 coil cleaning. They even tried to tack on a $60 diagnostic and take a 50% payment in ADVANCE!! Outrageous. No, thanks. AND, I saw four entries below on another review from 6 months ago the EXACT same set up, including using filters that are too small … that were provided from the company! The techs work hard and are very kind and capable, but they’re presumably pressured into leading and upselling their customers into debtor’s prison. Won’t be using them again and definitely cannot recommend.
