Working with landscape designer Pepe Ayulo was fun. He listened carefully to what we wanted, and the design creatively incorporated our requests. The members of the crew that came to install the two new planting beds were friendly, efficient and hard working. They made sure to check that the bed edges were correctly positioned, and then before the plants were installed they validated the placement of each plant with us. It was a joy to have the two new beds cut, planted and mulched in less than 4 hours! The work was done on a Monday, and by Tuesday we had multiple positive comments from neighbors!

This 2024 early spring review is an update to an original post I made 8 months ago. My relationship with Meadows Farms Landscaping, especially with Jim their top designer, has developed into a partnership. Delighted with the transformation of my front yard last spring, I had Jim plan a backyard design in early fall. I continue to be impressed with his process of working with my wife and me to fill a mostly shady area, comprised of oak and hickory trees. His design brings a blend of blooms from evergreen bushes and perennial flowers. A multitude of colors for every season from late winter to late fall. His passion is evident in the reasons Jim presents for a particular grouping of plants in the various areas of my landscape.

Impressive is accessibility to, and follow up with Jim, throughout the year, to answer my questions about plant care such as the optimum fertilizers for the plant types and soil composition, to pruning guidance for maintaining an exquisite appearance enjoyed from every house window, the deck and the patio. Decades of working with landscapers now and again, this is the first company that has demonstrated consistent interest that I am pleased with the results. I highly recommend.

Spring 2023
Meadows Farms hires excellent people, such as Jim and Francisco. I give both guys 5 Stars!

Jim designed our front-yard landscape after learning from my wife and me our objective, likes and dislikes. Jim has decades of experience designing and delivering extraordinary landscapes. He is an award winner in the industry and was a landscaping business owner with a couple of partners earlier in his career. We are lucky to have his talent here in NOVA with Meadows Farms. His design, comprised of compact shrubs and perennials, has at least one plant and often several blooming during All Four Seasons (yes, white blooms in winter!). I have only a little maintenance to keep the flower garden spectacular. Jim's design includes three “textures” within the landscape: Colorful River Jack gravel circling my large existing star magnolia; brown mulch positioned as bookends in the landscape; an area of vinca minor groundcovers in a bed of black, rich humus. Once the vinca minor spreads, it will replace the black humus texture with a sea of dark green. We’ve received many compliments from our neighbors.

Francisco is the site-foreman who installed the 34 plants and tree within a day, leading his 5-man team. As I watched the work progress, Francisco asked me now and again if I was pleased with the appearance and progress. Francisco leads his team well and was thorough when addressing my questions throughout the day. He came back a week later at my request, to spread more large River Jack for an improved appearance. I opted to purchase the smaller plants Meadows Farms offers due to my budget. My flower garden will reach maturity within 2 years. In exchange for my patience, I got a lot of color and texture – a beautiful garden - within my budget.

I highly recommend Meadows Farms for high-quality landscaping. Below are 2 Before Photos and 3 After Photos to illustrate the significant transition.

First, using a landscaping service was a luxury gift I gave myself for retirement. Unfortunately, the entire experience was horrible. Knowing we have three small dogs who use our backyard, the designer planned and executed a design using plants hazardous to our dogs. Unfortunately, one dog became extremely ill from eating one of the plants that turned out to be toxic to pets. We relied on the expertise of the landscaper. On top of it, they put mulch down that was infested with fleas. Our dogs never had a flea until the mulch was put down and the cost was ridiculous. Not only did we pay for plants and poor service, we also incurred costs for the vet for the dog that was sick, costs for 3 flea treatments for the dogs at the groomers, the cost of 2 pest control treatments for the yard, the cost of removing the flea infested mulch and buying new mulch, not to mention our time in taking care of this mess. The information the landscaper gave us about the mulch was discredited by our vet, pest control service and the internet. Would never recommend meadow farms for landscaping.

Review of Landscaping:
My husband Sidney and I paid to have seven arborvitae installed around our chicken coop and run last year; installation occurred mid-December. The arborvitae installed in the most visible location never looked as healthy as the rest. We started taking photos to document, reported back to landscaper and was told it needed fertilizer. Fertilized as well as watered regularly to no avail; a large section at the bottom is brown and the plant has not grown at all since installation almost a year ago. After weeks of the landscaper ignoring his emails, my husband called the Chantilly office and was sent right back to same landscaper. In the end, we were told that the division managers refused to replace the one plant as we had requested- stating that it will come back and to give it time. It’s so far behind the rest it will most likely not recover. No one ever came out to look at the overall health of the plant, only wanted to look at photos which do not do it justice. We chose Meadows because of their guarantee, but will be taking our landscaping business elsewhere in the future.

We have used Meadow's Farms Landscaping/Hardscaping Design for both our front yard a couple years ago and just this past week to start our new back yard. Rick Meadows did an excellent job designing the front, so we did not hesitate to call when we wanted to back redesigned. Once again, Rick used his vision and and listened to what we wanted. A great landscaping team of 4 showed up and over the course of 2 days, transformed our backyard into a nice sitting area, patio, steps, and some retaining walls for both looks and support. We are thoroughly happy, and will continue to look to Meadows Farms for future projects.

Approximately 20 months ago we had Meadows Farms install a dry creek bed in our backyard due to the erosion from the heavy rains we were experiencing here and Alexandria.

We started having some issues earlier this summer of 2021 due to the multiple flash flood rain storms that occurred in the area. I reached out to Meadows Farm and they sent someone over to scope of what was issue and how to rectify it.

A few weeks later, a crew of workers came out and took care of the issue and made our yard look better than ever. My husband and I are AMAZED at how nicely everything looks and how they resolved the issue in a timely manner!

We will continue to use Meadows Farms for our landscape and hardscape projects. We are VERY pleased customers. We want to thank all of those who helped make this an amazing project.

So after spending over $14,000 with this company for our patio late last summer the patio starting sinking and we called them and they came out to fix it and it seemed fine. During the fall it starting sinking again and was told to wait till the spring to make sure no other issues came about during the winter. This spring I had a professional come take a look at it to be sure it had been built and installed properly. Once we opened up one of the stones we found that all they had done was fill the inside with a little bit of dirt and almost 12 inches of sand and they never used 21A and lied about it when I asked them. My new contractor said it was built wrong and the sand is why it was sinking. I let a Meadow farms Manager come out to inspect it and he agreed it was built very poorly.
I told him I did not trust them to do the work again as before they had people building it that didn't know how to put a patio in. I needed it fixed fast as I was having an event the next weekend and so I had to hire my other contractor who only does driveways and patios to fix the poorly built patio to the tune of $4,000. I have pictures and videos of the entire process and plan to serve them a demand letter to get reimbursed the $4,000 I had to spend to fix their mistakes they obliviously made on purpose. I do not recommend using this company for patios the only thing they know how to do is plant trees and some flowers.

Farnaz Semsar is an excellent landscape designer at Meadows Farms Landscaping. She is skillful, knowledgeable about plants, soil and installation, and has an intuitive sense of what works best in a space. She has been 100% responsive and supportive of our needs, always listening and addressing all our concerns. She never tries to up-sell us on more plants, but rather suggests how to build off what we already have that is healthy. She is the landscape designer I always wished for! i only wish i had had her years ago, as i have faced challenges with landscape designers from other competitors to Meadows Farms. Bravo Farnaz! Bravo Meadows Farms!
